Ok, so when I first bought this brush I didn't really get what youtubers and other reviewers were raving about in regards to using this with foundation. I'm holding my hands up, and I admit I was WRONG... so very very wrong... I applied my studio fix with this today, and also my studio tech with it the other day, and the results were very impressive. I did find that the brush shedded a few hairs, but I'm only talking about like two all together, and it's only been washed once (I always wash new brushes before using them - you don't know who's been fondling them in the shop lol)
I particularly liked the way I could use this brush to build up coverage on the less desirable, blotchy bits of my face, which would be a little more difficult with the 187 because it has a larger head to it, and herefore covers larger areas than the 109. I'm still glad I have the 187 though and will continue to make good use of it. I'll use it for foundation applications on days when I have better skin/ am in a rush, powder and creme blush applications...
I actually discussed the use of the 109 with the MUA at MAC prior to buying it, and she said that while it does give great results it's made of natural hair and as such will probably absorb more product than the 187, so people using this might go through more product. She also said that it might not last as long as a 187 as people tend to press the 109 into the skin too hard and this damages the hairs making them prone to breaking. Conversely the longer white hairs on the 187 are synthetic and so they don't absorb product and are less prone to breakage. So it seems the key is to treat this brush kindly, condition it after washing, and don't press too hard into the face - In fact I actually found that a lighter touch with this gave better results...
Hope this helps...

Another great review - I must buy some Mac brushes. Just using Bare Escentuals at the minute. Could you review the Mac foundation you have please??
No worries - I'll warn you though, I have about 4 so it will be a long one lol! I have studio tech, studio fix fluid, mineralise satinfinish and mineralise powder foundation. I also have full coverage, but have yet to play with that one...
I picked up the 187 for foundation but found to be flimsy and more time consuming. I use it for blush and would love to pick up another to apply highlighter. These days, I use my fingers but I did hear the suggestion of using a flat foundation brush in downward strokes, then using the 187 to buff it in...Haven't tried it yet but need to. Just found your blog and I'm really enjoying. Happy New Year!
Hi aestheticcoo, thanks for your comment... also thanks so much for subscribing. I think with the 187 brush the key is to stipple the product on lightly and then buff it in very lightly after that. It is a great brush for blusher, especially cream blusher, Have you tried the 188? It's a smaller version of the 187 and is good for blusher and highlighter...
No, not yet. I do think it would be excellent for highlighter and the apples of the cheek. I should give the 187 another try but it's usually colored with a blush...maybe it's time to pick up another...Thanks for the tips!
No problem. The 109 really needs a light hand too, and it has a really small and compact head, so takes a little longer to use to apply a full face of foundation... You might not like the 109 if you find the 187 takes too much time. It does give a really airbrushed finish though - some people find the 187 leaves them looking slightly streaky and is difficult to use around the eyes and nose. The 109 is great for these areas...
Happy1234 - I'm trying to build up my collection - starting with face brushes then moving onto eye brushes... For mineral makeup I'd highly recommend the everday minerals flat topped kabuki brush which is $10 on their website... It's amazingly dense and so soft. It feels like velvet on the skin and buffs the minerals really well, giving a high level of coverage due to being flat topped. They also do a round topped one for lower coverage, but I haven't tried that one.
I'm in love with Philosophy Supernatural Airbrush. It's synthetic and dense, though soft, and it's better than 187 to use with heavier formulas. I feel that a light brush doesn't do a good job with cream foundations, and this does.
And it's also perfect for liquid products. And powders (mineral foundations, blushes). It's really all I need. Love!!
Have you tried it?
