Dear Deirdre... I have the worlds most boring hair, please can you help?

So, the title really says it all lol - I am BORED BORED BORED with my hair - a couple of months ago now I dyed it red (home dye job due to cash flow issues - funny how I can always manage to find cash for makeup though!?). Needless to say, it didn't turn out as vibrant as I want, but it was a slight improvement.

As is the case with all red dye though, it washed out really quick (despite the new regime of reduced hairwashing)... apparently this is due to the size of the molecules involved in red dye... Not really a biggie, but this time I really wanted a vibrant look - I'm after either pillarbox red or what can only be described as a smoked paprika colour...So off I goes to Boots to see what I could find... I knew I needed something quite scary looking to get the results I'm after, so I picked this -

Now maybe I was expecting a lot from this, but I was really kinda hoping it would come out fire-engine red, and I know those kinds of results don't really come from boxed up DIY hair dyes, anyway here is the result... Oh and WARNING - Makeup free pics coming up here - hastily taken whilst getting ready for early shift today...

I have no idea what I'm looking so smug about in this picture either!

I'm actually pretty pleased with how shiny it looks, but I just keep on lusting after that really really red look... I have no idea if it will suit me or not, but I'd rather find out now than regret not doing it in a few years...

Anyway, as you can see, I also have possibly the worlds most boring hairstyle - A layered shoulder length bob. Now my BF is insistent that this looks great, but I'm really not so sure - I used to have a bob, and I've had it cropped really short in the past too.

So can anyone suggest any easy ways to jazz up my hair? I usually loose the will to live with it, and end up tying it back... I'm wondering whether to get one of those conical wand gizmos... Can anyone recommend a decent one?

That colour really suits you, makes your eyes look amazing!

I am growing my hair out right now, it's a similar sort of lenght to yours. I have naturally wavy hair so just dry and to make the natural wave look half decent and not like a frizz ball!

Boring? Surely not! Even though it's not quite the red that you wanted, I think this looks great! I love how shiny your hair is in the second picture. :)

I have been dying my hair black since time began (yes I am that old!) and ever few months I have a fit and strip the colour to dye it red as I love that bright pillar box red also. The only dye that gives me the colour I am after is the manic panic range. You should check the website and don't be scared of us goffs/punks etc :-) as the products are fab. They have a whole host of different red shades (if I remember correctly one is actually call pillarbox)

I think the colour just now is lovely but I feel your frustration as I know exactly what you mean. As for jazzing it up *jazz hands* hmmm I always think strong colours suit a strong cut so maybe sharpen up the bob with less layersor maybe a blunt fringe.

Anyway enough war and peace from me!

XxX

Caroline (makeupbycaroline, @vocaltest) is amazing for recs for the hair...it was her who gave me the formula to get my crazy red hair that I am rocking now :)

I would definitely ask her if you want it redder because that shade it is now really does work but I think pillarbox would be amazing :) (spot the crazy red hair lover lol)

xx

@Whitoxicity - Aw, thanks hun! x

@Tali - I used a colour protective spray from Elvive - highly recommend it, and I might actually do a post on it, as that's where I think the shinyness has come from...

@RobertSmithsMistress - I ain't scared of no goths/punks! Lol - I went through a major goth phase while I was a teenager... I'll check that website out too! x

@LovesGreyBoy - I was goin to ask her actually I know she is always great with hair questions, and I've seen her hair in person and love it x

when i worked in a hairdressers i always thought that with even the perfect hair colour, you need a perfect cut to go with it otherwise it can make your hair colour look lank and still normal and nothing special, now it all looks nice to us but maybe your just bored of the style, dare to be different and get a new hair style and you might that it is much much much better.

I really love that hair color. So vibrant and pretty. I think the more blunt bob would be really cute!!

you know chocolate brown hair with thin streak/s of red would really suit u :D also your haircut is great gurl!!! yes curling it would definately make them look much more volumised and glam you up! Try creating different types of curls with a ghd or try the 32" babyliss conical wand :)

i think a bob would be ok but it would blunten your features how about a new fringe, that always cheers me up :D

@Superficial girl - I know, its really hard to keep red looking good - it just goes down the plughole every time you wash your hair!

@132ndStreet - this is very true... I think a hairdressing trip is long overdue!

@Krista - I agree, might have to over-rule the boy lol...

@Shifa - funnily enough I had it those colours before and really liked it...thanks for the conical wand tips too x

@132nd Street - I love new fringes at first but then I get annoyed with them...

I really like the cut - I think a classic cut works well with bold colour. I know the kind of red you mean - almost scarlet, like Poison Ivy in the terrible Batman film? I've always wanted hair that colour; you should go for it!!

@132ndStreet - lol, I'm special aren't I!

@GraceLondon - thats exactly the colour I'm after!!!!

It's the Emily Blunt haircolor in The Devil Wears Prada!!!! IT looks fab on you! I think you should always keep your hair down. It looks so pretty down. Have you tried out the tips for red hair that Doe Deere does to keep her hair red?

You think your cut is boring? Mine is layered. The picture I'm enclosing is oh, two years old, and my hair still looks like that only a wee bit longer. Kinda like Andy (the inspiration) after the makeover in Devil Wears Prada. Ignore the guy on the right.

I'll be your Andy if you'll be my Emily! LOL.

@Katy - some great tips on that blogzine - thanks so much, and that picture is class - LMAO at the way you said "Ignore the Guy on the right", like he'd just wondered in from somewhere lol. Thanks so much to my Andy! xxx

You're very welcome. I love that blogazine. It's my eye candy of the day. Her cosmetic line is the Illamasqua of the candy variety--bright, sparkly and addicting. The link for the line is on her sidebar (Lime Crime). Between Lime Crime and Illamasqua, I'm going to be a very broke college student!

P.S. The red you're trying to go for is Clairol Herbal Essences permanent hair color in Deep Red. I remembered the name when I was scanning the comments. I had a red phase when I was 15. I don't know if you get the brand in the UK but that's the color you're looking for. You can't miss the box in the hair color aisle as it's bright pink.

@Kate - thanks! We do get herbal esscences in the UK so I will keep an eye out for it! Thanks again xxx

That red looks lovely on you and your hair gorgeously glossy!

I had stunning 'Run Lola Run' red hair in a mod a-line bob once upon a longtimeago. Loved it, but as with anything extreme, it grew old fairly quickly. I got mine done at the Vidal Sassoon Academy nr. Bond Street for under £20. I wonder if they still do it. Used to be full of students getting cheap but fab colours and cuts!

mizzworthy said...

@Guba - thanks so much, hope you continue to enjoy it!

@132ndStreet - I think the theme of the next contest will definitely enable use of glitter!

@Lipglossiping - god I LOVE that film! One of my all time fave - I also adore her hair x

Wow, I wish my hair went that colour after using that. I used it once and it didn't lift it at all! Must be because of years of putting a dark dye on it. It looks great on you! x

I think the color looks amazing on you, such a flattering shade and gorgeous to boot!

I would love to see you with a shorter bob, I think it would really flatter the shape of your face ;)
