Ever feel like you were born in the wrong period of time lol?
A couple of weeks ago I blogged about the fact that my nearest Illamasqua counter were launching the powdered metals, and that their fab artist Adam, (who also happens to do the makeup for the Pussy Cat Dolls!) was venturing Ooop North fromhis usual haunt in London, to celebrate and help launch the powders... naturally I was unable to resist booking in for a makeover/makeup lesson with him! I have been loving 1920's looks for a long time now, so I decided to take the opportunity to have that done, Illamasqua style...
I have to say, having my makeup done by Adam was a really fun experience - I always love popping into Illamasqua and having a play, but this time I had some great demo's of dance moves as performed by "The Dolls" thrown in for good measure! I'd highly recommend having your makeup done by any of the Illamasqua artists, especially if you love to try something different - although I am reliably informed that they often get requests for more tame looks, which they are very happy to fulfil as well!
For starters, the shape of eye makeup was very different back then - whereas we now concentrate on creating a more "winged" look which elongates the eyes, creating a bit of a cat-eye shape, back in the 1920's it was all about creating a rounded shape -ie widest above and below the highest/lowest parts of the Iris... In the 20's there was far less choice of makeup colours too - makeup was usually dark and quite dramatic by todays standards...
The "round eyed and innocent" look was also further empasised by adding a pair of false lashes which were longest in the centre, rather than the outer part - Adam used Illamasqua false lashes number 5 - these were probably the most comfortable false lashes I've ever worn, as they were very light and natural.
The next thing he did was apply the base - matte primer was applied in the "T-Zone", and satin primer was then applied to the cheeks. Cream foundation in my usual shade (CF125) was then applied (We did toy with the idea of "paling down" my skin, however I think Adam then realised I was quite pale enough!). This was kept porcelain pale by setting the foundation with transclucent loose powder (LP010). The rest of the face was kept minimal as blusher was not commonly used in the 20's apparently, however the cheekbones were highlighted with a touch of pure pigment in "Breathe".

Adam created the eye look by using a concealer slightly paler than my own skin tone as a base. He then used a flat shading brush to pack on the matte shade "Lestat", a very very dark charcoal grey, in a rounded shape.
He then applied Sophie liner pencil below the lash line in a rounded shape also and patted Lestat over this. Over which he patted Pure Pigment in the shade "Fervent", a gorgeous multi-faceted dark coppery brown shade with teal and blue reflects. He used the edge of the shadow brush to soften the edges of the shape very slightly. Lestat was also used to brush through the brows to create a rounded brow shape... Pure pigment in the shade "Breathe", a pure sparkling white, was used as a brow highlight.
Finally uber-dramatic dark dark red lips were carefully pencilled in using a medium pencil in the shade "Torment", over which lipstick in the shade "Growl" was applied.
Obviously this is not a look for the feint hearted, but I loved it! The look could also be made more modern and wearable by using different colours and perhaps a gloss instead of a lipstick - I actually loved the lippie so much I bought it though!
What do you all think? Do you have a favourite "makeup era"?

You look lovely! It is a really stunning look on you!
I love the whole rockabilly vibe of the 50's but I have such a soft spot for the 80's :-) I know it is terribly OTT but I just can't help it!
That would be a good idea for a contest!
XxX

Oh wow that looks amazing on you!! been waiting to see these pics!!
@RSM - Great idea! Thanks for that hun, will add it to the list of possibilities! thanks for reading and commenting x
I really love this. So beautiful and I love how the colors all center around the lid instead of going outside of the lid and making it winged. So gorgeous and basically simple. I like a little bit from every era. I like this and will have to try it out..
@Jenny9119999 - thank you!x
@happy1234 - was going to text you later to tell you I'd put it up lol! Glad you liked it x

@Stephanie - Thank you - these colours look so dramatic on us pale peeps - you should give it a whirl!
@132ndStreet - funnily enough I did dye it today love - but not black! Am a ravishing redhead!
@TinaMBC- Glad you like it - Adam is a talented guy! x
we must see, i have to see it!
@132nd Street - fear not my lovely, I shall post a pic tomorrow - I want some suggestions for hairstyles too, as I currently have the dullest hair in the world, with the exception of the colour, which still isn't as bright red as I want it...
Fantastic! So striking, love how emphasised the cupid's bow is with that gorgeous lippy. Such a great look and really interesting stuff about the shape of the eye makeup.
I think he did an amazing job and IMO its actually a really wearable take on the 1920's. I wish I could make it to the counter this week to get "Adamed" but sadly I'm booked up :( Next time tho xx
Stunning look!!! I love it :)
You have such beautiful eyes, Mizzworthy. My brownish-grey eyes are envious.
I love the make-up look but I'm most definitely not a 20s girl. Dark eyes and lips remind me of my days as a ballerina and had to be "made-up" theatre-style for a production. I may have loved being a ballerina until I had to quit at 9.5 years of age but I despised performance time. Nothing made me cringe more than wearing tons of make-up and uncomfortably bright pink lipstick of the 90s (to my credit, I did get back at them by wiping said lipstick on the inside of my mouse grey mouse costume for the Nutcracker production and they never noticed). I'm 20 and I still shudder at any bright neon pink lipstick.
Era-wise, I kinda like the 1950s with the strong brow, the lip colors and cat-eye liner.
How fun!! I love how you described everything and I can't wait til Illamasqua hits the U.S.!!
this is just perfection!
You're so beautiful, you really pull this off well ^_^
You look awesome! I love Breathe - I got it at the masterclass we went it and it is an awesome highlighter.
Loving the lips too.
I so want to book a class with Adam. And ask him how he gets about in those heels all day, haha.
oh god hair styles, maybe get a side fringe or a big quiff or omg the possibilitys are endless
While I don't have a favorite era, I am absolutely in love with concept of exaggerated liner to create an Egyptian-esque look. It looks like you had so much fun, and you look fabulous!
@LipGlossiping - thansk so much! I found all this stuff really interesting - geek or what lol!
@DressJunkie - I really agree - I know a lot of other people wouldn't wear the look out though, but I love it! Didn't get anywhere near as many looks as when I walked out of selfridges with the green look from my blog header though lol!
@MadameBFatale - thank you!
@Kate - lol, I'm having a mental image of you looking very displeased with your makeup!
@Whit - I suspect you will love it!
@LibertyVonHodes - thanks chick, but I think its the makeup not the model that is pretty lol!
@132ndStreet - Hair appeal post will be up later on!
@KraseyBeatiful - thanks hun, I really had great fun, it was fab!
Love that look, so sophisticated, I will have to get that lipstick :)
@Replica - it looks like nothing in the tube lol - actually looks like a dark brown shade, but when you put it on its actually this really dark red - you don't see its true colour in the tube somehow! x
Ooh MizzWorthy...Absolutely GORGEOUS! I can't wait for this release...I'm drooling over here.
