S.O.P.H.I.E

Sophie Lancaster was a goth. She should have been celebrating her birthday on Thursday (26/11/09). Instead, her family and boyfriend will be remembering her, after she was brutally murdered for simply looking different.

Sophie's mum has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the issue of hate crime and intolerance in younger people and society in general. Illamasqua, have supported this cause since the brand was established, and they have commissioned a video commemorating Sophies life, whilst also bringing home how brutally and pointlessly her life was taken. The video has its premiere on MTV tomorrow at 9.15pm (during the commercial break in The Hills). Please try to take the time to watch.

You can also check out the Sophie Lancaster Foundation website HERE

You can also check out the Sophie wristband and pencil on the Illamasqua site to show support too.

I was a goth all through my teen years until my early 20s and the stick me and my now ex husband used to get was as if were killers. My ex was beaten pretty badly one day from a group of 'townies' as they used to be known as.
No one took it seriously is was as if well he asked for it for being different and the police said to him to try and not stand out as much.. he was 6'4 couldnt really hide him away in a crowds anyway.
Compared to the face studs ect they are lucky to have now I think we were very mild goths lol Fishnets and alot of black, crimped hair, stuck up with soap, tassels, leather, ect. We looked wicked.
Its not hard to believe that this happens still - there are always going to be those that get a kick out of beating up or humiliating someone different from them - they think it makes them the better being. I think its fear of the unknown.
RIP Sophie, if one thing comes out of your sad death I hope it will make people realise that this kind of violence because of appearance will not be tolerated.

@Sush - thanks for the comment. Unfortunately this sort of thing still does happen, which makes the loss of Sophie even more tragic.

@LizzClare - I know - I was a Goth myself for much of my teens, and got so much stick for it, even from my own family. Sadly though, I agree, far too much of this still goes on. Society in general forms opinions about people based on their opinions, and I'm glad this is finally being challenged by Sophies brave mum x

I always get the whole 'scene' thing coz I like dramatic eye makeup, I have a septum piercing and I dye my hair black. I wish people would quit with the labels and stereotypes. It doesn't do anyone any good.

PS I gave you an award in my newest post. :)
