Did you know that worldwide, women are twice as likely to lose their sight than men?
Cataracts and the eye infection Trachoma account for the majority of this - Women account for 75% of those affected by cataracts and 85% of those affected by trachoma in developing countries. Trachoma is an infection which leads to trichiasis, a condition where the eyelashes turn inwards, scratching the eyeball - painful and threatening to the sight.
The ramifiations for women affected by these issues are far reaching - they are often forced to give up what little income they have, causing increased poverty. Their children are often also forced to give up their educations in order to help run the home and raise their siblings.
Renowned portrait photographer, publisher and film director Rankin has teamed up with six renowned makeup artists (Michelle Campbell, Linda Orhstom, Ayami, Eli Wakamatsu, Mary Greenwell and Caroline Saulinier) to create stunning images to draw attention to this cause...
This campaign has been launched in conjunction with eyecare charity Sightsavers to highlight the issue and also draw attention to the fact that the cost of helping women affected by these issues areas little as the price of a drugstore mascara or eyeliner.
