Long Hair Dreams...

It occurred to me the other day that I have NEVER in my entire life had long hair. I mean past the shoulders, flicky long hair like this...

The reason for the lack of long locks, are vast and plenty.

Let us start with my childhood... a time in my life where most things were dictated to by efficient time management. My mum was a working mum, and was still under the delusion that you could "have it all", just so long as you could time manage. Sadly a child screaming about tatty hair and how much it hurt to be brushed, whilst simultaneously demanding some kind of fancy plait had no place in the timetable... Of course there were also the inevitable epidemics of "little visitors" (ie nits) at school, which my poor harassed mother had little time for...
I wish to make it clear at this point, that I don't actually blame my mother for her decision to keep my hair at a "manageable length" (ie a bob) for much of my childhood... This was after all the early 80's. A time when "having it all", actually meant "doing it all", ie working a full time highly pressured job, as well as doing the household side of things... Women may have been enlightened, but men, as usual took a while to catch up with the idea that if women worked then they might need to, ya know, get their arses off the couch and do some washing up or something... My dad did catch on sometime after the birth of my younger sister, however sadly, this coincided with what is now referred to as "The Great Hair Disaster of 1985".

"The Great Hair Disaster of 1985" was basically a trip that me and my mum took to the local "salon". My mum was due a cut and I accompanied her... so far so normal. The horror came when, after having her own "short and time-efficient" hairstyle cut, she plonked me in the chair and casually said "Just do hers the same" to the butcher hairstylist. For reference, the kinda style I'm taking about was something like this (this is not my Mum by the way).
I was completely and utterly horrified and disturbed by this turn of events. However at the age of five, I was rendered mute and obedient by a combination of shock and shyness. I walked out of the salon and covered my head with my hands. After much confusion on my mothers part, about why I was doing this, I think she kinda felt guilty about how upset I was by my new "do" and the fact that I was never even asked in passing if I wanted to be made to look like a boy. Suffice to say, the same thing never happened again, but my hair was always kept in a "neat" bob until I was a bit older...

Then came the dreaded "teenage years". I think the less said about this time in my life the better. Lets just say I had a lot of 90's style bobs which looked like wigs, and leave it there shall we? All I can say in my defence is that I thought it looked good at the time... I had a style crush going on for the 1920's look for most of the time too because of a TV show called "The House of Elliot" (anyone else remember that?)
My 20's were the time where I went a bit wild in the hair stakes - I had my hair cropped a la Posh, and believe me, I am not putting this photo on here to symbolise any form of admiration for this woman, I just had a hair style very similar to this...
Of course, I was also a lot slimmer in my twenties, and so this looked really elfin and cute back then. Being the fickle creature I am, I also got bored very quickly with my hair in my twenties (shame the same couldn't be said about my taste in men - my God I wasted my twenties on some L.O.S.E.R.S. but thats a whole 'nother story), so I grew it down to my shoulders then chopped it off again about three times during this particular era. This was also the decade where I started to get into the old home dye kits...

Then came my 30's, when the remnants of my 20's grown out shoulder length hair looked a little sad and drab. If I were to sum up the 30's so far for my hair, I'd have to give you one word - DYED. My hair has been various shades of red, brown and all in between. I recently dyed it "Cool Scarlet". NEVER believe the pictures on the hair dye boxes by the way people - this particular box had a lovely bright scarlet colour on it... however when applied and left for the required time, it turned out VERY dark red. Which I'm getting used to now as it happens...

The "problem" is, I have never known thus far what it feels like to feel my hair on my back, or anywhere past my shoulders (yes, I put the word problem in "" signs because I am very aware that this is actually not a real problem, like third world hunger or the economy or anything). If I don't do it soon, then I'm in danger of treading into the territory of the likes of Susan Kennedy from Neighbours who had long hair for far too long if you know what I mean...
Now, I'm definitely NOT saying that women can only wear long hair up until a certain age, but Susan here, definitely looked better after she had a restyle... Her hair just looked a little dated really. Maybe even if she'd kept it long but got some other kind of restyle done, she'd have continued to wear long hair well. Long hair can look great on older women - Jerry Hall and Jane seymour are both examples of women who have passed that "long hair past the age of 40" taboo". The problem is, I don't know if I'll be able to pull that off - so why not give it a whirl now?

Yup, this post was basically my very long winded way of saying, I'm not going to get that Lily Allen cut (did I mention that I'm fickle?). Instead I'm commencing on a bid for long hair - a "project" Long Hair if you will (well everyone else is on some kind of project around here... project ten pan, project no lipstick or whatever, so I might as well get in on the act...).

The old noggin started to tick away on this idea with the arrival of the Three More Inches haircare. Then I started to look into co-washing (its basically washing your hair with conditioner only... the lack of sulfates in conditioner is meant to help with giving you hair that is soft and strong and very long... like toilet roll. Anyway, if you want to find out more just search you tube or google!), and decided to give that a whirl, in combination with the "Three More Inches" stuff. I'm also starting to make healthy changes to my diet which I think will help, and I have a few boxes of multivitamins for hair and nail growth lying about the place which I'm going to finally use...  Oh, and I'm going to cut down the amount of heat I use on my hair too, by allowing it to air dry etc.

So, now I need your help! Any tips and tricks you have used to encourage healthy hair growth? Any similar hair disasters you want to share?

I'm sorry but I had to laugh while reading this!

My dad could still tell you in details how much he hated the über curly hair I got when I was 13. All my friendshad their hair permed but none of them had thick hair like I had - took over a year to get rid of it (by cutting, because the curl wouldn't leave).

Other than that, I've had all kinds of cuts and lengths and even colors (hello cherry red), but I've been growing my hair from a short cut for the past 2 years, they're just below my shoulders now.
It just takes patience and motivation - and a look at old pictures when you're about to have it cut, haha!

Plenty of massaging your scalp will help, as will eating lots of red meat - I used to be a vegetarian and my hair started falling out when I was in my mid twenties because of a lack of a protein retention amino acid. Eating red meat again has helped it all grow back.

I totally get the fickle thing. Have managed to grow my hair for 3 years now, and it's longish.. and I'm desperate to chop it all off, even though I know I'll regret it! Good luck and keep at it!

I'd like to think that I'm an expert on the topic of long hair haha :) I have had long hair for about 5 years now so hope the following helps!
1) It's not a sin if you don't cut your hair every 6/8 weeks - I get my hair cut every 6 months. Sure every hair type is different but if you keep cutting, it's just going to take you longer to grow your hair. If you struggle with this then maybe get like 1 inch of at the end of the 3rd month :)
2) If you do wash your hair everyday then change it to every other day.
3) Make sure you use heat protectants whenever you do use any heat on your hair.
4) Use good leave-in-conditioners on damp hair, after washing your hair and an intensive conditioner once every 1/2 weeks.
5) Don't use too many styling products near your scalp.
6) Remember it all takes time, be patient :)

Haha this made me chuckle!
I've been so boring with hair colour choices - always been some sort of form of blonde .. well, apart from once when I was 15 and asked to have my hair dyed "light brown" .. it turned out very dark brown (borderline black!) and I cried a lot!
As for growing your hair tips, I don't really have any except deep condition, deep condition, and deep condition some more! x x

Oh one more thing! My hair snapped off quite badly around this time last year and ever since I have been getting it trimmed every other hair appointment (every 16 weeks instead of 8!) and this has helped LOADS!

Such a good post hunni. Yeah long hair FTW. OMG my mum made me have a mullet when I was younger. Why do mums always think we should have the same style as them when we're little. God I was so bullied at school, haha.

I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on with the products you mentioned. I've been desprately trying to grow out my hair for the past 4 years and it is now only just past past my shoulders.

What a lovely long post and ever so personal, i love it! I love posts like that, when people don't review stuff and just talk about themselved and you get to know them better. You'd be surprised on how quickly your hair grows so it won't be too long before you get the lenght of your dreams. When I look at your hair on videos, it does not seem to be as it is unruly or too thich and untangly for it to have needed a lot of work for your mum to do. I've always had long myself. Bad episode in my teens when I wanted to have some hightlights and a short crop similar to the 1985 hair cut with the farrah fawcett's layerings on the side. Omg it was awful. I am quite fortunate to have lived all my life in a tropical place when I would leave my hair to air dry naturally. I would never use a hair dryer and I was offered my first hair dryer when i arrived in England. Even then I would not use it, as I would watch my hair early evening and go to bed whilst still a bit damp. Not at all good for you, but i think it really helped my hair to be not too bad. I feel, since I have arrived in england that there is this fashion which puts pressure on girl to have hair straightened at all times. I've never been a fan of that either, and I feel so sad people feel like they need to do it. Basically the only time when i use a hairdryer and straightener is when I have a night out, or a special look for youtube I want to have my hair nice for the photos but even now I don't bother with it. What I also do to look after it is caused by my rubbish shower. I have very little pressure in my shower so I always finishing rinsing my hair with a cold cold rinse. Not pleasant at all but i feel It makes the hair shinier and revived it a bit.
Permanent hair dye would make my hair dry, but semi permanent hair dye would make it all lovely and smooth, and I can tell i need another colouring soon, cos my hair is all dry
Not heard of this business of washing your hair with conditioner only but you made me curious and I want to research it now.

my God I wasted my twenties on some L.O.S.E.R.S. but thats a whole 'nother story = yeah, i'd love to read about that one too xx

Thanks for the great post

Ah, the horrors of short hair. I know that one well. I wasn't allowed to have long hair until I was 13? Anyway, it was a long time. I chopped it off quite a few times. I've learned over the years that short hair DOES NOT suit me. At all. I look about 10 when I have short hair and it's a PITA to groom. I get bird's nest hair when it's short!

What I've found helps is frequent trims. I have hair that's fine, so it's prone to a lot of split ends. Even when I was growing it out I got trims every three months so it looked nice. Layers are a godsend too.

Be careful not to pull your hair up in the same spot too often...your hair will bend and eventually break (it's not pretty, I'm telling you!). If you pull it up in a ponytail a lot, don't wear it just in one spot. Have your pony at the nape of the neck one time, centered in another, on one side, up at the crown, etc.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PULL ON YOUR HAIR. It's tempting, yes, but resist the urge. If you want strong, long hair, do a scalp massage when you use your shampoo. It stimulates the hair follicles and deters from hair loss. Don't color your hair too often either. Don't brush your hair a lot.

I haven't gotten mine to grow past the bra line. It's permanently stuck at the top of my bra band in terms of length. It's really annoying! So, if it doesn't grow past a certain point, know that's probably as long as it's getting. It doesn't mean you have to give up. I'm still holding out that it's going to grow another inch.

Ahhh...I can sympathise with you on this one. I am currently in phase 3 of 'Operation M.A.N.E'. Phase 3 is the 'I'm not used to long hair but if I cut it off now then i'll moan at my work colleagues/man/friends and they will want to kill me' stage.

It just hitting my shoulders now and doing annoying things like getting caught in things that I never thought you could get hair caught in eg. bag straps, trees, seatbelts, chairs etc etc.

As a child my mother gave me a series of severe haircuts that made me look like a boy and in my teens I had that horrible hairsprayed peak thing going on! I shudder when I think about it now.

Scalp massage, scalp massage and more scalp massage. Supplements also help if they're taken regularly, but they might be quite expensive. More expensive, as with everything else, does not necessarily mean better of course ;)
As a girl who's had both hair below her bum and a pixie crop, and who now has long-but-not-too-long-below-the-shoulders hair, I have plenty of experience with cutting and growing it out... So I'll say one more thing: even when growing your hair, do go to the hairdressers sometimes to tidy it up a little. Of course, choose someone who will not cut an inch off when you specifically said you are growing it... they can be stubborn like that, can't they. Just the very ends and a little shaping will do. I did find that whenever I skipped the 'tidying up session' I was starting to hate the kinky mess on my head and was giving up on it. I would go to the hairdressers and have it cut short again, then regret not sticking it out about a minute later.

aww I can undertand hun! I've always been a girly girl and am shattered EVERY time I get a trim done lol. I just love my hair and despise cutting it. You should try giving up literally all hair styling tools which cause any sorta damage and get into the habit of DIY head massage as that stimulates hair growth to quite an extent. Give it 3 months and you will have longer hair for sure :) Try and resist the temptation to chop the ends for a while though. Keep us updated on this one :)

LOL oh god I feel so bad for your younger self, that's a glorified bowlcut!

I had hair down past my ass when I was 5, and then at some point it turned into a bob. Then it got quite long, then when I was 15 I cut it all off, just a bit longer than pixie style. And now I'm growing it out again, but not Kate Beckinsale long. Just shoulder length and very choppy :)

My dad used to take me with him to the barbers and my hair was cut there for a few years!

It was short! No wonder I eventually grew my hair long and kept it long! I only go to the hairdressers now once every 4 months as I like to keep it long and I hate going!

My advice to you is if you want to grow it a bit then stay away from the hairdressers for a few months. As quite often they don't understand what a small trim is and they and up taking inches of when you wanted millimetres!

Keep your hair well conditioned and just let it grow for a while and see what happens. Massaging the scalp daily and gently pulling on the hair (hair tugs) at the root can encourage it to grow as it stimulates the blood flow to the scalp.

Taking a high dose of evening primrose oil would also be beneficial too. x
