Shimmer Cubes... Shine On!

Hi everyone,

So I have (finally) started testing out some of the makeup from the Body Shop Bloggers event... I wanted to just do a little post about my thoughts on some of the products.

First up, Shimmer Cubes - as far as I am aware, the Body Shop do a couple of permanent sets of these, and they also bring out limited editions for each season (Correct me if I'm wrong there!). As far as I can tell from the website, there are four sets currently available - Warm, Cool, Ice Cool and Deadly Night shades (smoky blues and greens). Each set contains 4x4g of product and retails for £15.65 in the UK... I like the fact that each cube in the set is individually packaged too, so sets can be mixed and matched. They can be used wet as well to give a more intense look, although the cube might need to be filed off a little when dry if you do this, so it can be used dry again.

They certainly live up to their name in terms of shimmer - I personally don't mind this, but I know a lot of people are fairly hesitant at times with shimmer.. Of the three sets we were given (Cool, Warm and Ice Cool) I think I actually like the warm set the best. All the sets are soft and well pigmented. They are really easy to smudge on with fingers for a casual smoky eye - this is perfect for me at 7am when I'm trying to get to work for an early shift!

L, Warm; M, Cool; R, Ice Cool.

I do like the individual shades in the LE Ice Cool but I personally don't think they work well together on me - I think they would look great in combination with other colours and on darker/olive skins, but with my pale complexion, I'm not so sure - I like to use the pink from the set as a highlighter though!

I've tested these a few times over UDPP and find they last about 6-8 hours (ie, they are still evident after a shift!) without fading too much. I also like the fact that there is not a vast amount of fall out with these either.

Next up, shimmer waves (Are we sensing a theme here lol). These retail at £15.65 as well, and come in bronze and pink varieties, both of which are really pretty - The bronze is too dark for me, but is my sister's HG bronzer! The darker shades of both sets can be used as eyeshadows, the whole set can be swished together as a blush/bronzer and the lighter shades can be used as highlighters.

Another multifunction product I love is the lip and cheek stain (£9.25), which looks scary red in the tube......but just adds a lovely fresh stain to the lips, and a fresh flush of colour to the cheeks - it can be dotted on and blended with fingers or a brush. I like this applied to the lips with a pink shimmery gloss over the top. Pinky shades from the shimmer cubes can also be smudged on the lips over these for a dusty look. The shimmer waves and cubes both contain marula oil, which is supposed to stop them being too drying on the lips/skin, despite being powders...

One product I'm not sure about yet though is the Matte and Shimmer Cheek Colour (£11.70)

This was something that sounded great and I really wanted to like - the colours look amazing in the pan etc, and I like the idea of blending the colours together/using a specific part of the product, however I find that I need to apply a lot of the product to see any colour on my face (anyone else had this problem), which is really unusual for me - I usually have to apply most blusher with a light hand! Once I have got a decent amount of colour though, it does look nice, and the amount of shimmer is just right for a dewy, healthy looking skin. I'm not sure if anyone else has found this?

Still loads to test out - I'm interested to see how the mascara's perform and the individual eye shadows and shimmers...

So I hope this helped - I'd love to know what you all think of these products if you have tried them, and what other products you rate from the Body Shop?

Thanks so much for reading

I might try to get the warm one. We'll see--I've never been one for shimmer. X.x I do find that I like applying any sort of eyeshadow with my fingers when I'm in a hurry though.

All Shimmer Cubes look wonderful, but I simply love the last quad :).
And I'm getting the pink Shimmer Waves in a swap - can't wait ^_^!

P.S. I hope one day I become established enough as a beauty blogger to receive free stuff...It's why I do it :-P.
Just kidding ;). Well, mostly - there's some truth there too ;D.

I love the shimmercubes, I've already got quite a few of the sets. My Mum claimed the warm set as soon as I opened the bag. The lipglosses are really nice, have you tried those yet?

@Chrissy - Yeah, it's great applying with fingers - I find these easier than some others due to their softer texture...

@Cris - hope you like the shimmer waves! Lol, I don't actually get a lot of free stuff hun - the body shop is the only company that have done it! I'd never recommend anything that wasn't decent though!

@jenny - the lip and cheek stain was a real surprise to me actually - I thought it wouldn't look too good on whan I saw it in the tube, but it blends easily and looks fresh on!

@Sirvinya - Lol - I didn't even show my mum and sister the shimmer cubes, as I knew they would snatch em lol!

@winterblossom - they are quite good, and I like the way you can mix and match the sets a bit because they come in packs of four, but each one is also individually packaged...

Thanks everyone for the comments! x
