FOTD... And Newly Dyed Hair!

Another quick and easy look today... for some reason everything is rather washed out today on photo's... but hopefully, you get the idea!

I used Bourjois healthy mix foundation, Chanel Bronze Universal (or Soleil Tan De Chanel as its know nowadays... *tut*), and Inglot liquid blush in shade 87 on the face, with The Body Shop Bronzer in Warm Glow over the top of the cheeks. Highlight was MAC msf in Perfect Topping...

On the eyes the Body Shop eye colour in Jade from the "Baked To Last" collection, and a black kohl on the water line. 

On the lips, I have Estee Lauders Crystal Baby - its probably one of my top five fave lippies of the hundreds I have! A definite repurchase!

I also did a quick dye job on my hair today as well - I used a L'oreal Herbashine which I picked up in Boots recently for around a fiver. I have chucked the box away but it was a medium mahogony brown shade and had a picture of Bar Rafielli on the box (I have no idea who she is). The Herbashines are one of those new generation ten minute jobs - non permanent, so you get a shiny refreshed look without damage. Not dramatic but it looks a lot better than it did this morning!

Bourjois Smoky Eye Trios

I've picked up a couple of these little trios from Boots over the past few weeks - they are available in 8 colour ways (if you can actually find them in stock!) and retail at £7.49 for 4.5g of product. They come with a sponge applicator too, but I prefer to use my brushes with them...

On the left we have a warm golden brown trio (#3 Mordore Chic), and on the left a golden green trio (#2 Or Baroque). Both of these trios are wearable for daytime, but can also be vamped up for nocturnal looks too. 

The back of the palette offers a basic template/instructions on how to create a "classic smoky" ie darkest shade at the lash line and a haze of colour fading out from this. Obviously, you can also create a more modern smoky with lots of contouring.

I used the Golden brown trio to create a classic smoky;

And I also used the Green trio to create a contoured smoky;

The eye shadows are basically mini versions of the Little Round Pot shadows that Bourjois usually sell.
On initial swatching they can look a little poorly pigmented;

They do build up well on the skin - I used UDPP as usual for the looks above, and with a couple of layers they give good colour intensity. They also blend very well. I would avoid using fingers with these shadows though - they seem to be a magnet for the natural oils on skin, which can harden them...

Overall I think these are a great product - If I actually manage to find a store with decent stock levels I'll be picking up more - there is a lovely grey set and a pretty violet set I have my eye on - do you own any of these? Any recommendations?

Product Rave... Bourjois Éclat Minéral Pressed Powder.

I picked this up in Boots a few days ago, for around £8. The product is a dome shaped mineral based powder (slightly smaller than the ubiquitous MAC MSF's...), and is apparently "The first Hot Pressed powder enriched with radiance boosting mineral quartz for a matte yet radiant complexion"

 

I picked up the shade Brun Abricoté. There are 5 shades available - vanillé, beige medium, doré, brun abricoté, and hâlé

Apparently "hot pressing" the powder means "its texture is as fine and lightweight as that of a loose powder. It softly glides on the skin to reveal the natural glow of your complexion and provides a matte, even and natural finish". 

 I was slightlysurprised to see the colour of this powder - these seem to be aimed to use as complexion enhancer/setting powder, however this shade looks a little pink to be of use for that...

I was still curious enough to purchase though, as I thought this would either make a great blusher, or when brushed on loosely would be nicely brightening on the skin... I have to say, I am SO pleased I picked this up, its a perfect day-to-day blusher for pale skins, easy as pie to wear, and lasts well on the skin.

To me, this is a great way of adding a natural flush, which removes the corpse like tendancies of my pale skin, without looking "made up" - perfect for work, or just "no-makeup-makeup-days. It also has a natural matte finish, ie it's not flat and ageing,  but has a slight healthy looking sheen in the light. To apply as a blusher I used a MAC 109, as you need quite a dense brush to build up the colour. You could also apply this all over the face with a really loose brush, as a complexion brightener.

I'm so impressed with the performance of this, I've also purchased the palest shade (Vanillé) to use for setting foundation. 

Fans of mineral makeup in the purest sense might want to check through the ingredient list first of all, as the first ingredient listed is Talc... I haven't had any sensitivity issues with this, but its always best to check.

FOTD - Putting Bourjois products to the test!

I was recently sent a few bits from Bourjois by Wendy at their press office to have a play with - a mascara, a lipgloss and an eye-pencil - of the three pieces, the eye pencil had instant appeal to me as it was a fab electic blue colour (the shade I recieved is No 46 - Bleu Neon), and boasts of being waterproof... Apparently the "Contour Clubbing Waterproof" liners are a fairly new product in the line - they are available for £4.20 at ASOS or in Boots and Superdrug stores nationwide...

After recieving these products it occured to me that it has been AAAAGGGGGEEES since I picked any products up from the line - I used to adore the double ended mascara when I was younger. I believe it's fairly common knowledge that Bourjois products are produced in the same factories that produce a lot of the Chanel products, so I decided to pick up a "Shimmering Shine, Liquid Eyeshadow" in shade No 33 - Beige Metallique, which looks like this -

I picked this up because I had a feeling it might make a good multipurpose product - ie a liquid eyeshadow, an eyeshadow base (in the same vein as UDPP in Sin?), and also as a liquid highlighter which could be used on the face... I still need to give this product a good test out, so will report back on this! (I also had a good look at the other liners available in the range - there were some interesting looking "duochrome" liners which I might pick up later on...)

Anyway, I used these two products to create this look - I was going to work, so this is really as loud as I can go unfortunately lol... I was advised in a recent FOTD post that I don't smile enough (I do this on purpose as I hate my teeth, and think I generally look quite strange when I smile...), but I made a special effort with the smiles today...

So how well did the Bourjois products perform?
I wore the look for a delightful NHS shift in the community for 8 hours,so altogether was wearing the makeup for 9 hrs between the pics being taken above and the pic below...

I'm actually really impressed with both the liner and the liquid eyeshadow, given the price, the liner lasted really well - it did loose some of its intensity, but it is still very much there and really quite vivid still - the metallic sheen that the liquid shadow produced lasted well, akthough dod fade slightly in terms of colour (The light at the time the second photo was taken does it no favours really...) - but not bad for drugstore!

Old School Makeup

So this was started as a video by pinksealight, and as I don't have a camera yet, I'm going to be doing this in an old school style, just via my blog...

My interest in serious decent makeup didn't really take off until I was in uni and my housemate introduced me to a few pots of mac eye shadow, strobe liquid and a high end moisturiser. Prior to that I was very much into bourjois, rimmel and max factor... before that I was a cheap and cheerful, ususally secondhand makeup person, which is so laughable now.

So in my first proper makeup bag (the simple life, when makeup fitted into one small bag, brushes and all...) I had a black kohl pencil (I used this to try to do a smoky look, but ended up looking like I'd gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson... I also went through something of a goth phase but the less said about that the better. Suffice it to say purple mirrored tassle skirts, an army jacket and a pair of green doc martins were involved...) my mums old mascara (OMG - germ city!) a 'mood' lipstick that looked green in the tube but went on pink (these were the days of mood rings... I had one which looked like an eye and the eye would change colour, oh and I believe Barry M actually still make a lipstick like this!), a black lipstick (what can I say, I was ahead of my time...) from a pound store, a Rimmel pressed powder (this was, needless to say the wrong shade and I looked orange...) and a Rimmel concealer. As you can imagine I looked delightful throughout my teenage years...

Following on from this I turned to Bourjois. I went through a blue eye makeup phase, and they had a range which included a pale blue mascara, and a sparkly pale blue shadow. Pat butcher eat your heart out! I thought I was the best thing since sliced bread in this particular combo too. Obviously Rimmel lippies in birthday suit, heather shimmer and also a rather unfetching peach frost shade, the name of which now escapes me... Probably my minds way of coping with the mental trauma of this memory...

At uni, I started to experiment with liquid foundations, often loaded with SPF and as a result of this, I appear to be white in most photographs taken in the first two years there. I also had a brief flirtation with a bronzer from collection 2000 which entailed a brief return to my oompa loompa rimmel pressed powder days...

Shortly after this, my housemate took pity on me and introduced me to her MAC shadows etc. Since then, my obsession has flourished, and I think my makeup skills have too (god I hope this is true!). So I would like to dedicate this post to Yvonne, the housemate who saved me from myself and engendered a deep love of makeup in me...
